Multi-State Collections of Searchable Historical
Digitized Newspapers and Periodicals
All of these collections have large amounts of content and
none of them are geared specifically to baseball research. My selective
lists of key titles are chosen accordingly and comments are geared toward my
interests and to cities and periods when baseball was prominent. I have done my
best to include newspapers with complete or near complete runs and omit ones
where there are just a few stray issues. This is difficult, however, and
there may be gaps within a newspaper's date range.

Comments: the Thomson Gale collection includes issues from
hundreds of different newspapers, but often only a handful of newspapers per
title. Its search function and quality of reproduction are excellent.

All newspapers are between 1900 and 1910, so I have not
tried to break them down more exactly. Key titles:

New York Sun
San Francisco Call
Salt Lake Herald
The Times Dispatch (Richmond, Va)
Washington Herald
Washington Sunday Globe
Washington Times
Comments: The only states included are California, DC, Florida, Kentucky, New

the key ones. The search function and quality of reproduction are excellent.

NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE
Subscription site:
www.newspaperarchive.com
Comments: This is a huge collection, focusing on small and
mid-size Midwestern newspapers. The collection is large and diverse enough
that I haven't tried to summarize key titles. The search function can be
used to find specific names or words, but it can be very frustrating to use. I often do the same
search twice in rapid succession and get different numbers of hits.
PAPER OF RECORD
While you have to sign up, this site is free:
www.paperofrecord.com
Key Titles:
Sporting News 1886-on
Baltimore Afro-American 1902-1978 (some gaps)
Lock Haven (PA) Express 1889-1931
Williamsport (PA) Sunday Grit 1882-1990
Toronto World 1880-1887, 1918-1921
Comments: It's a fairly large collection, but mostly from
Canada and Mexico and/or from periods before baseball became popular. The
reproduction quality of issues of Sporting News prior to 1930 are generally very
poor -- they can be browsed and read, but for all intents and purposes cannot be
searched. The search function gets better after 1930, but only works only in five-year increments.

New York Times 1851-2003
Wall Street Journal 1889-1989

Comments: Some libraries have a few of these selections, but few have all.

PROQUEST AMERICAN PERIODICAL SERIES
While ProQuest is best known among baseball researchers for its newspaper
collection, it also has many other offerings. The American Periodical Series (APS),
in particular, offers several titles with excellent coverage of baseball.
Key Titles:
Forest and Stream 1873-1930 (baseball coverage is only good during the 1870s)
National Police Gazette 1845-1906
Spirit of the Times 1835-1861
Comments: More libraries seem to have this ProQuest collection than the
historical newspaper collection. First-rate search and reproduction quality.
